Crusher Operator

About this role

Processing & Refining turns what comes out of the ground into product — crushing, beneficiation, the alumina refinery, the laboratory and quality control.

Operate the crushing circuit: feed control, clearing blockages safely, and keeping the area clear of the spillage that makes it dangerous.

A continuous plant is never stopped, only handed over, which makes shift discipline and handover quality the difference between a good week and an incident. In the refinery the work is with caustic liquor at temperature, and the protective equipment requirements are absolute rather than advisory.

Primary responsibilities

• Operate the crushing plant to the feed rate and product size required
• Manage the feed to keep the crusher choked-fed rather than starved, which decides both product size and liner wear
• Clear blockages and bridging safely, and never from inside the chamber without full isolation
• Monitor liner wear and report it before it affects the product
• Keep the transfer points and conveyors clear of spillage

Skills required

Day to day this role works with Housekeeping, Monitoring and Crusher Operation.

• One or more years around crushing plant
• Full training provided
• Two or more years operating crushing plant
• Managing feed to keep a crusher choke-fed rather than starved
• Clearing blockages and bridging safely, never from inside the chamber without full isolation
• Liner wear monitoring and reporting before product is affected
• Keeping transfer points and conveyors clear of spillage
