Laboratory Technician

About this role

Processing & Refining turns what comes out of the ground into product — crushing, beneficiation, the alumina refinery, the laboratory and quality control.

Prepare samples for assay — crushing, pulverising, splitting — and keep the laboratory clean enough that one sample does not contaminate the next.

A continuous plant is never stopped, only handed over, which makes shift discipline and handover quality the difference between a good week and an incident. In the refinery the work is with caustic liquor at temperature, and the protective equipment requirements are absolute rather than advisory.

Primary responsibilities

• Prepare samples and run routine analyses to the laboratory procedures
• Operate and maintain the laboratory equipment
• Record results accurately and flag anything outside the expected range
• Maintain laboratory housekeeping and chemical safety, including correct handling and disposal

Skills required

Day to day this role works with Sample Preparation and Laboratory Work.

• Twelfth standard with science, or a diploma
• Methodical; training provided
• A diploma or degree in a science subject
• Sample preparation and routine analysis to procedure
• Laboratory equipment operation and maintenance
• Accurate recording and flagging results outside the expected range
• Chemical safety including correct handling and disposal
