Shipping, Freight & Customs moves the goods: carrier relationships, bookings, documentation, customs clearance, chartering and vessel operations.

Know where every container is and what it is costing us: availability, repositioning, detention and demurrage exposure, and the return that should have happened last week.

This is the part of trade that happens in the physical world and refuses to be tidy. Vessels get omitted, containers get held for examination, a wrong container number on a bill of lading stops a consignment at the gate, and demurrage accrues while somebody argues. The work is judged on landed cost and on how few surprises reach the buyer.

Primary responsibilities

• Manage the container fleet — availability, positioning and the balance between locations
• Track equipment and reposition it before a shortage becomes a booking that cannot be taken
• Manage detention and demurrage exposure across the fleet
• Coordinate repair and maintenance of containers and the survey that decides it
• Manage leasing arrangements and the return conditions attached to them

Skills required

Day to day this role works with Container Management, Repositioning, Detention and Tracking.

• Two or more years in container or equipment control
• Three or more years in container or equipment management
• Availability, positioning and inter-location balance
• Repositioning before a shortage becomes a booking that cannot be taken
• Detention and demurrage exposure management
• Container repair, maintenance and survey coordination
• Leasing arrangements and return conditions
