Workshop Supervisor

About this role

Mine Maintenance keeps the fleet and the plant running — HEMM, workshops, electrical, welding, hydraulics, tyres and instrumentation.

Run the workshop: the job queue, the fitters on it, spares availability and the isolation and lock-out discipline that keeps people safe around machines under repair.

The central tension is preventive maintenance against production pressure, and the function is judged on whether it holds the schedule when the pit wants the machine back. Component life here is decided by unglamorous things: oil cleanliness, greasing discipline, and taking a tyre off before it fails on a haul road.

Primary responsibilities

• Run the workshop — the jobs, the bays, the crew and the priorities between them
• Plan and allocate work so the critical machine is not queued behind a routine service
• Ensure the work is done to standard and signed off before a machine goes back to production
• Manage tools, equipment and the workshop's own safety
• Keep the job records and history accurate, because they are what makes failure analysis possible

Skills required

Day to day this role works with Scheduling, Team Supervision, Safety and Workshop Management.

• Diploma in mechanical engineering with six or more years in a heavy workshop
• Five or more years in a heavy equipment workshop including supervision
• Job planning and bay allocation so the critical machine is not queued behind a service
• Work quality sign-off before a machine returns to production
• Tool, equipment and workshop safety management
• Accurate job records and history, which is what makes failure analysis possible
